Georgians are seeing snow in the northern part of the state this evening. Several school systems in the area have canceled classes for Friday in anticipation of icy conditions on the roads. Schools are also closing in other parts of the state.

At the Atlanta airports, some flights were canceled due to conditions elsewhere.

An arctic cold front will continue to move through the state Friday.

The National Weather Service predicts up to three inches of snow could fall in the north Georgia mountains. The metro Atlanta area could get around half an inch before the precipitation ends overnight. Trace amounts could be recorded elsewhere. Southeast Georgia could get a dusting of snow Friday.

The freezing temperatures may lead to icy roads and frozen power lines and trees.

Georgia's Department of Transportation has already begun monitoring roadways for the pending arrival of snow, sleet, or both.

The DOT’s Mark McKinnon says in addition to prepping the fleet of trucks with sand and salt, crews have pre-treated some bridges in north Georgia to help prevent icing later on.

McKinnon says workers are ready for dispatch statewide. But there is one extra challenge the department’s had to deal with:

"With our budget crisis we are down on manpower…we’ve got to do a little more creative scheduling to make sure that we have everybody covered."

McKinnon says 2,300 DOT road workers are on-call and working 12-hour shifts until further notice.

In Southeast Georgia, the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools are getting lots of phone calls about Friday classes.

"We are closely monitoring the freezing weather which may be approaching the area overnight," says Karla Redditte, public information officer. "No accumulation of snow or ice is expected. Therefore, as of now, classes will be in session on tomorrow, Friday, January 8."
