Oglethorpe Power May Build New Plant
Primary Content
Middle Georgia's Monroe County could be getting a third power plant. The county is already home to Georgia Power's Plant Scherer, one of the largest emitters of carbon dioxide in the country. The proposed plant, owned by Oglethorpe Power, would use natural gas to produce electricity, which emits far less CO2 than a coal-fired plant.
Oglethorpe Power's Greg Jones says the plant will not go online until 2015.
"It's an attractive fuel as part of an overall mix and we'll probably just continue to pursue it as part of our overall strategy."
The company will decide later this year where they will build the natural gas plant.
