Trauma care officials will be handing out a million dollars in grants to help improve Georgia’s ailing system.
Money from the new super speeder law will be used to pay for the grants. The funds will help hospitals attain trauma designation by improving emergency care.
Dr. Leon Haley Jr. is the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Grady Hospital and a member of the Georgia Trauma Care Network Commission. He says hospitals not deemed trauma centers have less oversight even though they may treat critically injured patients.
“They don’t have the reviews that each of the designated hospitals do. They don’t turn in data the way we ask designated hospitals to do.”
Grants between 50 and 300-thousand dollars can be used to pay for physicians and other hospital changes that will help them become official trauma centers.
