School systems across Georgia are planning their budgets for next year and when it’s all said and done officials say thousands of teachers will be out of work.
This is the time of year when teachers start signing their contracts. But in places like Peach, Cobb, and Bibb County they’re getting layoff notices.
That’s what Jeff Hubbard with the Georgia Educators Association calls a financial Armageddon for public education.
“Now you’re talking about massive cuts to instruction, higher class sizes, loss of academic programs. These are learning experiences that the children will never be able to get back.”
Hubbard says most school systems in Georgia are broke. He says austerity programs in the last seven years and recent cuts have taken 4.5 billion dollars out of public education.
