Under the plan the state-owned Medical College of Georgia, it’s hospital system and the physicians group will become one entity under a single advisory board.

It will be headed up by incoming president Dr. Ricardo Aziz.

Interim MCG president Dr. James Thompson says the move will save state dollars but could result in fewer jobs.

"It’s not our intent to eliminate any positions but there will be efficiencies gained from this and as people retire and leave there’s a possibility that they will not be replaced," said Thompson.

The plan still has to be approved by boards of the hospital and the physicians group.
