A Georgia roadway that runs all the way from the South Carolina to Florida line is one step closer to completion.

Highway 441 travels north to south the entire length of the state. It’s one of the so-called “GRIP” or Georgia Road Improvement Program corridors.

In 1989 the legislature approved the construction of 12 4-lane road projects connecting nearly all cities across the state. Vonda Everett is with the Georgia Department of Transportation.

“The purpose behind it was to create some connectivity and also to improve safety but to actually help economic development.”

Everett says 441 is around half complete. On Tuesday the DOT opened a 63-million dollar section of the road in Dublin. The estimated cost to finish construction is over a billion dollars and that could be delayed by budget shortfalls.
