Georgia officials are practicing this week for the possibility of a hurricane coming ashore along the Atlantic coast

The simulation knows as Hurrex 2010 follows fictitious hurricane Sophie which would make landfall near St. Mary’s on the Florida border.

It would mean major evacuations from the coast, so agencies ranging from the Department of Transportation to the Red Cross are part of the exercise.

Buzz Weiss with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency says the 3 day practice run keeps everyone on guard.

“The last major hurricane we had on the Atlantic coast was in 1898. Now what does it tell us? It tells us that we are way over due. And I think that one of our greatest enemies is complacency.”

Georgia has had its share of flooding and tornadoes over the past 2 decades. It came mainly from hurricanes and storms that entered Georgia through the Florida Panhandle.
