The State Board of Education today denied an application for a virtual high school.

The Georgia Virtual Academy Charter High School had been denied by the state’s Charter School Commission two months ago and was hoping to overturn that ruling. Matt Cardoza is a spokesman for the Georgia Department of Education.

“The State Board denied the charter. So nothing changed, it’s still denied.”

The original denial was based on problems the commission saw with accountability. There was also fear that the academic standards would not be acceptable.

Georgia does have one virtual school. The Georgia Cyber Academy serves about 6 thousand students in grades K through 8.
