The first female two-star general in the history of the Georgia Army National Guard was honored Sunday.

The promotion of Major General Maria L. Britt was celebrated at Fort McPherson just south of Atlanta.

Britt became a brigadier general three years ago, and got the second star last month.

The commander of Georgia's National Guard is the first female to hold the 2-star rank in the Guard's nearly 280-year history.
