Macon Prison Guards Suspended Over Prisoner Abuse Allegations
Primary Content
State officials have suspended seven officers from Macon State Prison after allegations that inmates were abused
by guards last month.
Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kristen Stancil said Friday that the offices are suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegations.
The state locked down four Georgia prisons in December for five days after discovering inmates were launching a protest to seek better work and living conditions.
Inmates have alleged that guards used violence to get them out of their cells and back to work during that time.
Stancil said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting the probe at the request of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens.
