The Southeast has seen more storms than normal this year, and the weather season is not over yet. And, forecasters are concerned about severe weather in Northwest Georgia Wednesday afternoon and evening.
A new report by the University of Mississippi finds so-called “Dixie Alley,” which includes Northwest Georgia, is the most active tornado region in the United States.
Tornadoes in this region that also includes Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas tend to be stronger and stay on the ground longer. They also happen at night resulting in more deaths.
Senior Forecaster Dan Darbe is with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.
“Georgia hasn’t had F5’s but we’ve had a lot of f4’s over the many years and I looked at where they occur and they mostly occur in North Georgia.”
Darbe says this spring there have been 7 tornadoes in Georgia. He expects the severe weather to start winding down in late May.
