Savannah authorities Wednesday delivered binders with sex offender photos to all schools and libraries and other public buildings.

A new state law requires every sheriff's office to make the photos available.

Georgians for years have been able to go online to find registered sex offenders living nearby.

Now, it's in print.

But the effort is taking time.

Michelle Gavin of the Chatham County Sheriff's Office says, four officers have spent months organizing nearly 400 sex-offender photos to send to more than 100 public places.

"They have been spending many hours going through the pictures, getting quotes on who can help us put it together for the best price," Gavin says. "And then every day these binders can change."

Gavin says, it'll be up to the school, library and other binder-holders to keep up with daily changes her office could send telling them to add or remove photos.

"It's going to be kind of a wait and see on how much people want to access these," Gavin says.

But Gavin says, there's clearly interest.

About 2,000 people are signed up to get e-mail alerts when sex offenders move into their area.

The Chatham County website gets about 4,000 views for sex offender information each month.
