Today lawmakers released maps detailing proposed changes to Georgia’s legislative districts. On Monday the legislature will meet in a special session to finalize the maps.

This is the first time the maps were released early before the special legislative session on redistricting. In addition to boundary changes Georgia will add a new congressional district.

State Representative Allen Peake from Macon says people should expect changes. Right now Macon is part of Congressman Austin Scott’s 8th District but could end up being represented by 2nd District Congressman Sanford Bishop.

“It’ll be reasonable. It’ll be constitutional. It’ll be in accordance with the Voting Rights Act. I can tell you what it won’t be. It won’t look anything like the maps that were done in 2001 when the Democrats last controlled it and you had spaghetti strips for districts.”

Any final maps would have to be approved by the U.S. Justice Department. Georgia is one of nine southern states under the order that keeps minority votes from being watered down.
