Authorities say the visitor center of a dairy which has been toured by thousands of Georgia schoolchildren over the years will close this month.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that the Mayfield Dairy's visitor center in Braselton will close Oct. 31 after nearly 2 million visitors passed through during the more than 14 years it was open.

Officials say the dairy is not closing, only the visitor center.

Braselton Town Manager Jennifer Dees said the visitor center has been a key tourist attraction for the region. She said there aren't many schoolchildren in northeast Georgia who haven't toured it.

Jamaison Schuler, a spokesman for Mayfield owner Dean Foods Co., said it was a difficult decision to close the visitor center but keeping it open had become economy unsustainable.
