The parent company of Food Lion and other supermarket chains has announced that it will close 29 stores in Georgia as part of a company-wide restructuring affecting 1,000 workers in the state.
Delhaize America, a Belgian company with U.S. headquarters in Salisbury, N.C., said Wednesday it will close 113 stores across the southeast within a month. Stores across metro Atlanta will shutter, as well as locations in Macon, Waycross, Rossville and Savannah.
Company spokeswoman Christy Phillips-Brown said 27 stores will remain open in the state.
Total job loss in the U.S. will be nearly 5,000, but the company didn't have a breakdown on how many workers will be laid off in Georgia.
Delhaize America runs more than 1,600 stores in 16 states.
