The Sumter County School Superintendent is out of a job. On Thursday night, the embattled school board voted to fire Dr. Roy Brooks.

The firing comes just a day after the state’s school accreditation agency wrapped up their investigation of the Sumter County school board.

The board voted 6 to 3 to fire Dr. Roy Brooks.  The school system will have to buy Brooks out of a year’s contract, around $150,000.

Investigators from the school accreditation agency, The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools just left Americus after investigating complaints into the board’s leadership.

Board member Dr. Michael Busman says he was blindsided by the decision to vote the Superintendant out--- especially after a recent review showed that Brooks had met his goals:

“It makes no sense whatsoever, I mean, in these economic times, to pay a whole years worth of salary plus hire someone else with a similar salary when he was doing a good job.  The kids are the ones who are suffering, the kids and the community are suffering over this.”

The motion for termination was made by Board member Alice Green who reportedly said she was not happy with the Superintendent’s performance.
