Athens Mayor Wants Cuts
Primary Content
Athens' mayor is proposing cuts to the transit system and fire department as part of broader efforts to balance Athens-Clarke County's 2013 budget.
Mayor Nancy Denson released her $107.5 million budget plan Monday. It proposes ending Athens Transit bus service at 8 p.m. The mayor's proposed budget also would eliminate a ladder truck company and three firefighters, saving $133,900.
Denson said she didn't think it would have a big effect because ladder trucks, which are used to put out fires in tall buildings, are rarely used.
Commissioners are scheduled to review the budget several times before voting June 5.
