Two Colleges May Become One University
Primary Content
The Georgia Board of Regents will vote on a new name for two merging colleges. Macon State College and Middle Georgia College in Cochran could become one university. Four of the six names under consideration include the word university. They include University of Central Georgia and Middle Georgia University.
Charles Richardson is the editorial page editor with the Telegraph in Macon. He says Macon State is already well positioned to become a public university.
“They’ve got 18 bachelors programs. They’ve got some post graduate programs. So, they meet all the criteria of a university and it’s about time we had one.”
The merger takes effect in January of 2013. Six other schools within the university system of Georgia are also combining.
