A third of American households have no life insurance and half say they need more insurance. Now a program being tested in Georgia trying to bridge that gap.

MetLife is offering $10,000 to $25,000 in life insurance coverage on a prepaid card available at Georgia and South Carolina Walmarts. Customers buy the card, then call to answer a few questions and activate the coverage.

MetLife is testing the cards in Georgia because of the state’s diverse geography and culture, said Manish Bhatt, a senior vice president with the insurance company.

“You’ve got big urban cities, you’ve got a lot of smaller cities. There’s a mix of different types of mindsets, of cultures. It’s very representative,” Bhatt said.

Bhatt said the program is supposed to make it easier for people to get some level of life insurance coverage. Cost is determined by the amount of coverage and your age.

He said the cards are piloting in Walmart stores because five out of six Americans shopped there in the last year.
