Savannah-Chatham County police are moving some of their personnel into a new $4.5 million Administrative Services Center built on land once used as a federal agency's bug farm.

City officials planned a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday for the 23,000-square-foot facility. In addition to administrative service workers, it will house the police department's budget office, its gang unit and a secured property and evidence room.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture once used the property for insect research, but donated it to the City of Savannah in 2001 on the condition that it be used for law enforcement purposes.

The center was funded with local option sales tax money as part of an $11.4 million plan that includes construction of a new police training center on the site later this year.
