Jekyll Island says residents and others who buy annual passes for cars they drive on the island state park must switch to a new type of ID tag by early October.

The Jekyll Island Authority says it's getting rid of the barcode scanners that annual pass holders have previously stuck on their cars to access the island. The new system, which reads tags placed on the inside of a vehicle's windshield, will be up and running Oct. 4.

That's the deadline for changing to a new pass, which costs $45 plus a $13 fee to install the ID tag. Annual car passes are mostly used by Jekyll Island's 800 residents and others who visit frequently year round.

Visitors are charged $6 for a daily pass to drive onto the island.
