Kayla Guilliams is an environment and science reporter at The Current through the 2021 Dow Jones News Fund data journalism program. She is also a graduate student at UNC Chapel Hill completing her master's degree in journalism, with hopes of pursuing reporting full time after graduating in 2022. She has reported for The Daily Tar Heel, WALTER Magazine, the Mountain Xpress, NC Policy Watch, UNC Media Hub, and Shoresides News.
This beach water sampling and testing is managed by the DNR’s Coastal Resources Division, which in May received a $277,000 grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency to fund this public health and safety initiative.
