Georgia Public Broadcasting in Augusta will present “Jazz At The G”, a six-part concert series, in conjunction with the Georgia Regents University Department of Music, Garden City Jazz, and The Greater Augusta Arts Council.
Performers include The JAMP Masters, The Tandem, and Joel Cruz with Karen Gordon. The first performance will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at the D. Douglas Barnard Jr. Amphitheatre, on GRU’s Summerville campus. Admission is free and attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets.

Additional performances are scheduled through Spring 2015 at the amphitheatre and at the university’s Maxwell Theater. A portion of the proceeds from the series will fund music scholarships for students in Wycliffe Gordon’s Jazz Studies Program at GRU.

“It is a perfect time to expand the reach of this truly American art form,” said GPB-Augusta Station Manager Drew Dawson. “With jazz icon and Augusta native Wycliffe Gordon on faculty with the GRU Department of Music this year, we hope to not only make the campus more welcoming to local jazz aficionados, but also to provide opportunities for GRU music students to showcase their talents and share the stage with locally, regionally, and nationally known jazz artists.”

“The amphitheatre is a jewel in the heart of Summerville,” said GRU spokesperson Christen Carter. “It is our hope that, by hosting this series of concerts, our neighbors in Summerville and our friends across the CSRA will discover another opportunity to enjoy the creative passion of artists in the area.”
Free event parking is available on GRU’s Summerville campus, which is designated a tobacco- and alcohol-free zone.
