On January 28, 2025 at 9:00 PM, GPB will premiere "Great Migrations: A People on the Move," a powerful documentary by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. This new four-part docuseries sheds light on the epic journeys of African American migration over the 20th and 21st centuries, and how it has shaped our nation by exploring the meaning behind those movements.

In honor of the release of this film, GPB is creating its own story gathering initiative called "Everybody Comes From Somewhere". Over the course of February, we will be collecting the history of Georgians and how they came to be a part of the Peach State.

We invite you to share your own family's migration story. Whether your ancestors journeyed north in search of opportunity, or you or your family have migrated in more recent times, your story is valuable and we want to hear them!

How to Participate:

Record in GPB Studios: Come to our studios and record your story in person with GPB staff! This professional setup will allow you to get a behind-the-scenes look at production at GPB and ensures the quality of your video for ours and your safekeeping. Just follow this link to book a time to come and record.

What to Expect: Once you find a time that works for you, please arrive at GPB 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. You will be greeted in the lobby by GPB staff. From there, you will be guided to GPB's recording studios.

The session will involve responding to prompts related to you or your family's migration story to Georgia. Some examples include:

  • Why did you or your family members choose Georgia to move to?
  • What traditions have been passed down in your family?

The recording session will last approximately 30 minutes. Upon completion, you will receive a copy of your recording within a few weeks. Your recorded contribution may be featured in a special event celebrating the release of "Great Migrations: A People on the Move" on February 26th.

Your stories will be preserved for future generations and contribute to a growing understanding of the ongoing impact of migration on our society.

Let's keep the stories of our ancestors and our own journeys alive! After all, everybody comes from somewhere and if we don't record these stories, they will be lost to time and movement.
