Primary Content
"By this, I propose to demonstrate the vulnerability of the South and make its inhabitants feel that war and individual ruin are synonymous. I will push into the heart of Georgia...destroying all. I can make the march and make Georgia howl."
- General William Tecumseh Sherman
The story of Sherman’s March is not only a decisive American historical event, but also one that many teachers cover in class on a yearly basis.
On Tuesday, September 1, 2015, Georgia Public Broadcasting and the Atlanta History Center will host a premiere screening of “When Georgia Howled: Sherman on the March. Activities include a reception, film screening and panel discussion moderated by GPB News Senior Correspondent Rickey Bevington. (For more information on this event and how to sign up, contact our Member and Audience Services Department at 404-685-4788 or call toll free at 1-800-222-4788).
If you enjoyed the Emmy-winning "37 Weeks: Sherman on the March", then you’ll love this hour-long companion piece that provides an in-depth look at Sherman’s March across Georgia.
The film is produced by award-winning filmmaker Bruce Burkhardt, who also co-wrote the piece in collaboration with Atlanta History Senior Military Historian Gordon Jones. Jones shares his expertise and the vast collection of photos, maps, documents, diaries and newspaper accounts curated by the Atlanta History Center.
In a previous interview conducted by Ellen Reinhardt, Burkhardt explained that these sources were “very revealing about what was going through their heads at the time, particularly the people inside Atlanta.”
This documentary truly brings Sherman’s March to life. Incorporating segments of this film into your class is sure to give students insight into the events, warfare strategies and emotions of all involved. It will also spark informative discussions about Sherman, his military strategies, Confederate and Union soldiers and its effects on civilians and African Americans. Not only is it a great way to integrate an insightful digital resource, it can also inspire writing prompts, debates, projects and more!
Georgia Public Broadcasting will also broadcast "When Georgia Howled: Sherman on the March" on September 10, 2015 at 8 p.m. on GPB Television. After the premiere it will be available on GPB.org. Make sure you tune in!
