The Foundation has Been Laid – 5,000 Jobs to Follow

Georgia Power has announced completion of the basemat structural concrete for Vogtle Unit 3 – the first nuclear power plant constructed in the U.S. in 30 years.

According to a company news release - the placement at Vogtle Unit 3 encompassed approximately 7,000 cubic yards of concrete, which will serve as the foundation for all of the nuclear island structures, including the containment vessel and the shield building. It covered an area approximately 250 feet long and 160 feet wide at its widest point, and the concrete measured six feet in thickness.

The two new nuclear reactors being built near Waynesboro, GA represent the largest jobs project in the state. At the height of the construction process 5,000 jobs will have been created. Upon completion, 800 new full-time jobs will be realized.

Georgia Power currently serves 2.4 million customers across 155 of Georgia’s 159 counties.
