More than 15 colleges and nonprofits receive money from Dollar General.

Dollar General not only helps shoppers save money, but they are also helping individuals to read and graduate from high school.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $6 million dollars in grants to more than 725 schools, nonprofits and literacy organizations.

“At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of Serving Others throughout the communities we serve,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “It’s exciting to see the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s outreach in action as we partner with organizations to further education and literacy and make a real difference in people’s lives.”

More than 15 Georgia schools and nonprofits have benefitted from their generosity. Augusta Technical College Foundation, Central Georgia Technical College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College Foundation, and West Georgia Technical College have received $5,000 or more in literacy grants this past year.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993 in honor of Dollar General’s co-founder, J.L. Turner, who was functionally illiterate with only a third grade education. He was a farmer’s son who dropped out of school when his father was killed in an accident. With determination and hard work, he began what has now become a successful company.
