Tommy Jones, the head coach at Cherokee Bluff, earned his 100th career victory on Friday when his Bears defeated Banks County 42-0.

Jones started the program at The Bluff and has gone 36-33 there, with back-to-back region championships in 2020-21. This year’s team is 5-0 and ranked No. 7 in Class 3A.

He began his career with seven seasons at Lumpkin County (27-43) and spent five years at Dacula, going 37-22 with three region championships (2014, 2016-17).

Jones comes from a coaching family. His father, Tom Jones, was a longtime football and baseball coach in DeKalb and Gwinnett County. His brother, Philip Jones, is the head football coach at Brookwood.

Ben Hall passes century mark

Oconee County coach Ben Hall won his 100th game on Oct. 6 by beating Loganville 45-7. The Warriors followed that on Friday by beating Class 3A No. 3 Stephens County 35-10.

Hall is 16-15 in three seasons at Oconee County. He began his career at Jefferson and went 44-8 in four seasons from 2013-16, with two region championships, and spent four seasons at Flowery Branch, where he was 41-17 from 2017-21.

No. 400 for Jones County

Jones County became the 95th school in Georgia to win 400 games on Friday when the Greyhounds defeated Union Grove 21-14. Coach Mike Chastain’s team improved to 4-1.

Chastain is in his sixth season at the school and has a 50-19 record, with three region championships, and is the school’s winningest coach. His predecessor, Justin Rogers, left with a 45-15 record after five seasons.

Jones County fielded its first team in 1929. The program’s first region championship came in 1961 under Linton Jones. The Greyhounds didn’t win another until Jeff Lee’s team went 9-3 in 2001.

Westover earns 100th win

The Westover Patriots earned the program’s 100th victory on Friday by defeating Griffin 44-7. Westover improved to 4-0 under coach Octavia Jones.

This is the second term for Jones at the school. He brought home the program’s lone region championship in 2013 by going 9-3. Jones is in his 10th season at Westover (2010-17, 2023-24) and is the winningest coach (50-49).

Among those who served there as head coach is Robin Hines, the former GHSA executive director. Hines was head coach for five seasons and posted a 19-31 record.
