Milton, ranked as high as No. 4 in the national high school polls, turned aside another challenger last week and held onto its spot as the No. 1 team in Class 5A.

The Eagles improved to 8-0 after beating fellow Region 7 power Gainesville 42-24 on Friday. The victory solidified the defending state champions’ position at the top of the GPB Sports Top 10.

The other No. 1 teams also held their positions: Carrollton in Class 6A, Marist in 4A, Sandy Creek in 3A, Pierce County in 2A, Toombs County in Class A Division I, Irwin County in Division II and Savannah Christian in Private.

The biggest move of the week came in Class 4A, where Ware County defeated then-No. 2 Benedictine 38-14. The emphatic victory vaulted Ware County back into the rankings at No. 7 and knocked Benedictine to No. 8. Ware’s success pushed undefeated Cambridge out of the rankings.

The other big move came in Class A Division I, where Thomasville used a 23-8 win over Fitzgerald to climb back into the rankings at No. 6. Fitzgerald dropped from No. 6 to No. 10.
