Hey, Did You Know? Mays-Miller Grove Edition

The Miller Grove-Mays basketball game will be played at historical Coretta Scott King Academy on the first day of February, which is also the first day of Black History Month. What better time to get a quick history lesson than on this edition of “Hey! Did You Know?”
Mays High School, located in Atlanta, was established in 1981 and is home to the Raiders. The school was named after prominent civil rights leader Benjamin Elijah Mays, who is best known for his outstanding leadership and service as an educator, author and civil rights activist.
The staff at Mays High School makes it their mission to provide students with an outstanding education and numerous social and athletic programs such as football, cheerleading, marching band, art club and many more organizations in which to engage in.
Hey, did you know … that Mays has five different specialized academies for their students, including a Mass Communications Academy where students have to opportunities to work camera, test lighting, and even be in front of the camera.
Hey, did you know … that Mays’ school newspaper has rated Superior at Georgia Scholastic Press Association annual competition in 2009? In fact, the online versions of students’ articles have been featured on PBS’s Online News Hour Student Voices section. (PBS, that’s us!)
Hey, did you know … that Mays is also known for its musically famous alumni? This school has produced such musical artists as Cee-Lo Green and one-third of the award-winning group TLC, Rozonda “Chili” Thomas.
Miller Grove High School is located in Lithonia and was established in 2004. The school is home to the Wolverines, who sport one of the top hoops programs in the state. Being one of the newest schools in DeKalb County, students have the ability to enjoy a brand new facility with the latest state-of-the-art equipment which assists them with their schoolwork and other student activities. Miller Grove’s student service organizations include Belles, BEAUX, Peer Helpers, and Ladies of Hope, to name a few.
Hey, did you know … that Miller Grove is the largest constructed high school in the history of the DeKalb County System such is understandable considering since their gymnasium comfortably seats over 2,000 people and is equipped with an indoor track.
Hey, did you know … that Miller Grove’s Broadcasting Video production crew is a former winner of the prestigious National Black Arts Festival’s Youth Film Challenge award!
Also, I special congrats to Lauren Flannigan, who is Miller Grove’s first Governor’s Honors award recipient. Congrats girl!
