Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division - based at Fort Stewart in Coastal Georgia - received their ceremonial send-off Tuesday before returning to Korea for the first time since the Korean War.
They are scheduled to spend a nine-month rotation on the Korean peninsula.
In the ceremony, soldiers wrapped up the flags representing the First Armored Brigade Combat Team. They’ll unfurl them in about a month, once the team known as the Raider Brigade is on the ground in Korea.
Brigadier General Sean Bernabe charged the troops to live up to the legacy of the Third Infantry Division in Korea. He read from a 1950 letter, praising the division’s operations there during the war.
“It is men - and I’ll add women - like these of the third infantry division carrying on the great traditions of their predecessors who will bring about the ultimate defeat of all who threaten our freedom and our way of life,” he read.
The combat team’s commander, Colonel Mike Adams, said they trained for most of the last year to support the US alliance with South Korea.
“If deterrent fails, then we’ll do our job,” he said. “And our job is to defend the Republic of Korea from North Korean aggression.”
