The U.S. Coast Guard is hosting a public hearing Thursday about a proposed rocket launching facility on Georgia's Coast.
Coast Guard hearing on proposed Spaceport Camden
During launches at Spaceport Camden, miles of coastal waters would be closed, including areas around Cumberland Island National Seashore. Camden County officials say the spaceport would boost the local economy. But others say it threatens the natural environment and existing industries, including fishing, shrimping and nature tourism.
"Simply freezing all activity in the waters would disrupt commerce on the intracoastal waterway, port access into Brunswick and other use for fisheries and water-based recreation," said David Kyler, executive director of the Center for a Sustainable Coast.
The Coast Guard is accepting public comments on the Spaceport through Oct. 10, 2018.
