Food And Hunger During A Pandemic: Direct From The Farm To The Public

GPB is exploring the issues of food and hunger in Georgia during the coronavirus pandemic through a video series featuring stories of those who are being affected, and those who are trying to help.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture has teamed up with local farmers to help them sell surplus fruits and vegetables caused by the coronavirus pandemic. With less demand from the food services and school nutrition industries, many farmers were faced with crops they couldn’t sell.
The Georgia Grown To Go program provides an outlet for farmers to sell directly to the public through a series of pop up markets across the state.
Farmers say it’s a win-win solution. Food doesn’t get wasted. They recoup lost earnings, and consumers get a fresh product directly from the farmers’ fields.
