Events, exhibitions, and food to mark Juneteenth celebrations around metro Atlanta

Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, will be celebrated with a plethora of events around the metro area starting this weekend. We’ve rounded up a guide to some of the events. 

Atlanta

High Museum
Wednesday, June 19, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.: The museum will celebrate Juneteenth with free admission plus inspiring activities for all. Preregister for conversations, performances, and art-making, not to mention food, music, and giveaways that celebrate the spirit of the holiday.

Atlanta History Center
Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Through on-campus events, cooking demonstrations, museum theater and exhibitions — including More Than Brave: The Life of Henry Aaron and a pop-up experience titled Barbecue Nation – the event will highlight Juneteenth’s legacy and underscore the joyous union of food, family and community through this year’s theme, “Home Plate.” See the full schedule of events at this link.

Brookhaven

City Celebration
Tuesday, June 18, from 5-8 p.m.: The city of Brookhaven celebrates at Skyland Park with performances and activities including a Juneteenth proclamation, 40+Double Dutch Club, Harambee Dance Company, Hungry Hippo Eats, an African American-owned food truck, and more. Get more details here.

Juneteenth Jam
Saturday, June 15, 4-8 p.m.: Join NBMBAA Atlanta for the annual Juneteenth Jam! to raise money to support the educational endeavors of its student members. The part will be held at the Distillery of Modern Art, 2197 Irvindale Way. Tickets are $100 for members, $125 for non-members, and $1,500 for reserved tables. There will be light bites, an open bar featuring specialty crafted cocktails, and a DJ.

Juneteenth Celebration
Wednesday, June 19, 5-8 p.m.: The cities of Sandy Springs and Dunwoody will come together at City Springs on June 19 for the annual Juneteenth Celebration. The free, family-friendly event starts at 5 p.m. with activities scheduled in Byers Theatre, the Byers Theatre Lobby, and the City Green. The tribute to freedom and liberty will showcase a performing arts production, a STEAM digital art gallery, educational activities, live music, dance, theatre, food vendors, and more. One Fulton Juneteenth Celebration
Saturday, June 16, 5-9 p.m.: The Juneteenth Federation in collaboration with the Georgia NAACP and the Atlanta NAACP will mark Juneteenth with a special event at Sandy Springs Middle School. The Food Studio
Wednesday, June 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.: The Food Studio is Atlanta’s first Black-owned, plant-based, commercial shared kitchen at Pittsburgh Yards. The Juneteenth event includes speakers, storytellers, cultural artists, and plant-based food tastings. Chef Kevin McGee will lead the groundbreaking, a reclamation of the historic agricultural site on which The Food Studio sits. Register here.

Verdure Kitchen & Cocktails
Wednesday, June 19, from 5-7 p.m.: Verdure Kitchen & Cocktails, the Midtown Atlanta restaurant renowned for its fusion of Western cuisine with African cooking techniques and ingredients, celebrates Juneteenth with half-off martinis — lychee, lavender berry, lemon drop, and African blend espresso.
