Lisa Young Alston, daughter of civil rights leader and former U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young, died Friday at the age of 67.
The cause of death has not been announced.
In a statement, her family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support while asking for privacy.
"The Young and Alston families deeply appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love and support from across the community as we deal with the news of the loss of our beloved Lisa," the release said. "We ask that the privacy of our family be respected as we deal with the loss of our loved one," the statement reads.
Details about the funeral are still being finalized.
Ambassador Andrew Young spoke about his daughter during his sermon at First Congregational Church of Atlanta United Church of Christ on Sunday.
"She seemed to be well prepared and she seemed not to have any fear," Young said. "She'd come by the house almost every Sunday after church and sit there and counsel me. And she was worried about me getting old and how I was going to deal with the problems of old age. It was a blessed time, but it won't stop now. I do not believe that there is a separation between life and death. I believe that somehow we are together over the generations."
A Howard University graduate, Young Alston worked with Inspiredu, an Atlanta-based nonprofit focused on digital literacy.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and Morehouse School of Medicine President Valerie Montgomery Rice were among those honoring her legacy.
