The Port of Savannah plans a $410 million overhaul of one of its sprawling terminals to make room for loading and unloading larger ships. The Georgia Ports Authority board approved the project Monday under a plan to expand Savannah's capacity for cargo containers by more than 50% by 2025.
The Georgia Ports Authority said Tuesday that its docks in Savannah handled nearly 5.8 million container units of imports and exports in the fiscal year that ended June 30. That's an increase of 8% from a year ago, when Savannah exceeded 5 million container units for the first time.
The Port of Savannah moved an all-time high 519,390 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) last month, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported Wednesday. That broke the previous record of 504,350 TEUs set last October and exceeded May of last year by 8.3%.

Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said Thursday he wants Savannah to have space to handle 9.5 million cargo container units per year by 2025.
