Georgia has the highest amount and fastest growing number of women entrepreneurs.

In a recent business study by American Express OPEN, Georgia has the highest and fastest growth of women-owned businesses between 1997 and 2014, AJC journalist Christopher Seward reports.

The top five states with the number of women-owned firms are Georgia (118%), Texas (98%), North Carolina (91%), Nevada (91%) and Mississippi (81%) (2014 State of Women-Owned Business Report, American Express OPEN).

Additionally, findings show that Georgia has the second-largest number of African-American women-owned companies (108,900, up 430 percent) after New York. The number of Latino women-owned businesses in Georgia has grown 325 percent to 15,000. Asian-American women own 18,600 companies in the state, up 253 percent. There are 2,500 Native American women-owned businesses in Georgia, up 130 percent.
