There is a new No. 1 team in GPB’s Class A Division I rankings, but not because the previous team in the top spot lost a game.

Toombs County ascended to the top of the rankings, moving up one spot, after its 33-29 win over Class 5A No. 9 Rome. It was the first time the Bulldogs (3-0) had ever beaten a top 10 team from a higher classification.

“Going on the road and winning at Rome is impressive,” said GPB’s Jon Nelson. “That will get your attention.”

The victory allowed Toombs to displace Savannah Christian at the top of the rankings. The Raiders beat Oceanside Collegiate Academy of Mount Pleasant, S.C., 44-20 and improved to 4-0. Savannah Christian dropped to No. 2 in Division A but remains No. 1 in the GPB Private rankings.

The two teams will settle the bragging rights on the field on Oct. 18 in Savannah. They both play in Region 3 but will be separated for the state playoffs. Toombs will play in the Class A Division I playoffs, while Savannah Christian will participate in the GHSA’s first Private playoffs.

The other No. 1 teams held their positions: Carrollton in 6A, Milton in 5A, Marist in 4A, Sandy Creek in 3A, Pierce County in 2A and Bowdon in Class A Division II.

There are only three newcomers in the rankings this week. Brunswick (2-1) jumped in at No. 9 in 5A after a 42-20 win over Effingham County. Warner Robins (3-1) returned to the Class 4A rankings at No. 4 after its dramatic 54-44 win over Class 5A No. 8 Houston County. Whitefield Academy (2-1) grabbed the No. 10 spot in the Private rankings after a 35-14 win over Social Circle.
