Restaurant Design Challenge
During this three week project-based learning unit, students collaborate to design a restaurant. Throughout the unit, students address mathematics standards by managing a $1,500,000 budget and designing a blueprint of their restaurant. Students also address English language arts and social studies standards by defining their target market, creating a name and logo for their restaurant, creating a menu, “buying” real estate, opening a business checking account and applying for a business license and launching an advertising campaign. Throughout the unit, students use a variety of apps and browser-based computer programs to carry out all project requirements. At the end of the unit, students present their restaurant plan and serve a dish from their menu to teachers, administrators and parents.

English Arts
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.
Mathematics
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3 digit by 2 digit factor.
Social Studies
Describe how consumers and producers interact in the U. S. economy.

About the Teacher
Jenny Ittner

Gwinnett County SchoolsJenny Ittner is a 5th grade teachers at Puckett’s Mill Elementary School in Dacula, Georgia. After 29 years of teaching, Ms. Ittner still believes she was born to be a teacher and finds that her main role is to shape the leaders of tomorrow. She believes the key to her students’ success is providing them with opportunities to learn through rigorous, relevant, and authentic experiences tailored to their interests. Ms. Ittner was selected as a “Promise of Gwinnett” for the 2016-2017 school year. She served as assistant coach on the Puckett's Mill Sparrowbots Robotics Team this year. They won the Georgia FIRST Lego League State Championship and competed in April at the World Championship in Houston, Texas. She was named the 2015 Chattahoochee Elementary Teacher of the Year. She received her Bachelor of Early Childhood Education from Jacksonville State University and her Masters of Middle Grade Education at Brenau University.
