The GPB game of the week pits Marist against Chattahoochee in a rarely seen matchup between an intown Atlanta private school and a large suburban school from the northside of town. The “ITP” private schools like Marist, St. Pius, Westminster and Lovett typically avoid playing the large, northside suburban schools like Chattahoochee in football. The War Eagles play Pius and ITP public schools like Tucker and Mays. Large “OTP” publics like Chattahoochee typically play each other. It is good to see a matchup pitting these two types of schools together and it should happen more often. The only reason it happened, however, is because the Cougars moved down to Class 4A from Class 5A this past offseason. … Dutchtown-Glynn Academy presents another clash in cultures. The Bulldogs, from the south metro area of Atlanta, face Glynn Academy of the Georgia coast. Dutchtown is a new school which was created to accommodate the influx of people to the metro Atlanta area. The Bulldogs have been playing since 2004 and this is their first time in the playoffs. Glynn Academy, on the other hand, was chartered in 1788 and is the second-oldest public high school in the Southeast. It is the oldest in Georgia. Their nickname, the Red Terrors, has its roots from the Revolutionary War and is certainly one of the more unique nicknames in high school athletics. The Terrors may feel like fish out of water tonight after traveling to Hampton to face Dutchtown. ... Valdosta-McEachern should be fun to follow tonight. Both teams boast high-scoring offenses that can move the ball on anyone. Earlier this year, the No. 5 Wildcats put up 64 on Brunswick in an overtime shootout while No. 4 McEachern scored 64 on Hillgrove in regulation. And, as you may have noticed, those two opponents are still playing, so it isn’t like they were beating up on some weak sisters. These two teams can score! … Speaking of putting up some big numbers, No. 1 Camden Co. will host Hillgrove tonight in Kingsland. The Hawks can move the ball on anybody. As previously mentioned, McEachern scored 64 on them earlier in the year, but Hillgrove put up 48 in that game. The Wildcats, meanwhile, are no longer playing the creampuffs of Region 3. They struggled a bit in defeating Region 1, No. 4 seed Coffee 28-18 last week. Now, they face quarterback Gage Henry and the high-scoring Hawks who unseated No. 3 Stephenson last week. Camden should win this game, but if they struggle scoring touchdowns, Hillgrove could pull off another unlikely upset.
