Do dogs really know when they have done something wrong? I know my mom’s answer to that question is a resounding “yes!” She is often telling me about our dog Bijou’s bad behavior, like the time he climbed on a chair in the kitchen and snatched a piece of chicken off the table. When she caught him, he ran off to hide in my room and didn’t come out until later in the night.

“You know better!” my mom yelled after him. But does he really though?

Tonight’s episode of Nova scienceNow poses the question “What are Animals Thinking?” In this intriguing episode, host David Pogue challenges preconceived notions about what makes “us” different from “them,” expanding our understanding of how animals really think.

Some of the questions they try to find answers to: How do pigeons find their way home across hundreds of miles? Do bees communicate with each other in ways similar to human cells? And most importantly, does your dog really feel guilty when he gives you that guilty look?
