Picture this: taking your students on a field trip to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, telling them to whip out their smartphones and tablets on which they will get a personalized guided tour of the place. Starting Friday, November 16 there is an app that will do that. That’s when you can download the new Fernbank app.

As you tour the museum, it will deliver information about the exhibits in a fresh way. According to the Fernbank: “This includes the introduction of timely and relevant content (such as starting multimedia content on the device when a visitor walks into a static exhibition), interaction with special “journals” that are customized and focused on scientific disciplines, and access to social media feeds to share their experiences.”

One of the journals allows visitors to tour the museum as a paleontologist. Explains the Fernbank, “The journal experience includes a combination of audio, video, touch-screen inter-actives, animation, sketchbook activities and question-and-answer challenges that are activated according to the visitor’s location within the Museum. “

The app is available for Apple devices on the iTunes store. It will be available for Android devices in the coming weeks.
