There is a new team at the top of the Class A Division II rankings this week. But that should come as no surprise, since that classification has been the most fluid since the season began.

The Early County Bobcats (4-0) vaulted five spots into the top spot after its 21-14 win over Terrell County to become the third team to hold the No. 1 position. Schley County and Clinch County have also spent time at No. 1.

“That classification has been the hardest to get a handle on,” said GPB poll voter Steve Graham. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it was like that through the end of the year.”

The other seven top-ranked teams remained the same: Buford in 7A, Hughes in 6A, Cartersville in 5A, North Oconee in 4A, Cedar Grove in 3A, Fitzgerald in 2A and Prince Avenue Christian in Class A Division I.

Class 3A Cedar Grove is coming off a 40-6 win over Class 7A Collins Hill in a battle between two reigning state champions. The Saints have one of the most difficult schedules in the state and this week play Class 7A No. 4 Mill Creek.

“Cedar Grove continues to impress,” said GPB’s Sam Crenshaw.

In Class 7A, icon state power Valdosta climbed into the rankings for the first time all season after its 25-0 win over two-time Class 5A champion Warner Robins. The Wildcats broke through at No. 9.
