Biomass is a Major New Source for Energy @ Georgia Power

Georgia Power has entered into a 20-year purchase agreement with Rollcast Energy, Inc. in order to boost its biomass capacity by 53.5 megawatts.

Georgia Power president and CEO Paul Bowers stated to Energy Business Review the new agreement is a part of company's strategy to diversify its energy portfolio, thereby providing its customers with cost-effective renewable sources.

"Our customers want safe, clean, reliable and affordable energy, and that's a commitment we will keep," added Bowers.

Biomass energy refers to any biological material that can be used as energy. Biomass energy is most commonly derived from low-grade wood waste like woodchips, wood pellets and tree limbs.

According to Georgia Power, the biomass conversion will have lower fuel and operating costs when compared to continued operation using coal, thereby making the plant more cost-effective for Georgia Power customers.

Georgia Power serves 2.4 million customers in all but four of Georgia’s 159 counties.
