The Georgia Ports Authority Reach Record Volumes

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA), which includes the seaports of Savannah and Brunswick, have reached record volumes for fiscal year 2013, reports MarineLink.com. The overall cargo tonnage increased by 2.4 percent, bulk cargo was up by 61.8 percent, and auto and machinery units increased by 11.7 percent. The increase in volume is attributed by business from new customers such as Subaru, Toyota, Caterpillar and biofuels.

“Our deep water ports provide vital support to our agricultural, forestry and manufacturing sectors,” said Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. “Because American-made goods are able to reach the global market efficiently through Georgia’s ports, these products are more competitive in international trade. That’s good for jobs in Georgia and across the Southeast.”

The Port of Brunswick is the 6th-largest automobile processing port in the nation. Savannah is also responsible for moving more than 16 percent of the East Coast’s overseas container cargo and is one of the few ports in the U.S. with two Class 1 railroad facilities on-terminal.
