Dog and cat owners, the Food and Drug Administration needs you. They are trying to determine why dogs and some cats are getting sick and dying after eating various forms of jerky imported from China. They are looking for any information that will lead to figuring this out.

Since 2007, consumers have reported illnesses involving 3,600 dogs and 10 cats. Approximately 580 of those pets have died.

Here is what to look out for:

  • If your pet has eaten jerky tenders or strips made of chicken, duck, sweet potatoes and/or dried fruit
  • If after eating those treats pets have lost or decreased their appetite or decreased activity
  • If your pet begins vomiting, experiences diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increases water consumption, and/or increases urination
  • If your pet collapses, convulses or exhibits skin issues

Be aware that severe cases have involved kidney failure, gastrointestinal bleeding and a rare kidney disorder. About 60 percent of cases involved gastrointestinal illness, and about 30 percent involved kidney and urinary systems.

If you notice these symptoms or any other strange behaviors, take your pet to the vet.
