Week 3: All No. 1 Teams Hold Their Places
Primary Content
There were no changes at the top of the GPB Football Rankings this week, with all No. 1 teams remaining in place.
But the latest rankings will only heighten the spotlight for this week’s GPB Football Fridays in Georgia opener between Cedar Grove and Westlake.
Cedar Grove (1-1) remained No. 1 in Class 3A, despite a loss to a powerful Florida team, while Westlake (2-0) moved up a notch to No. 6 in Class 7A after its win over Crisp County. The two powers will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
“Friday's game should be a tremendous match-up of teams loaded with future college football talent,” said Football Fridays in Georgia play-by-play announcer Matt Stewart, a voter in the GPB rankings. “By the way, the Saints beat the Lions 30-20 last year as Cedar Grove reached the GHSA Class 3A championship game and Westlake reached the 7A quarterfinals last year before falling to eventual state champ Mill Creek."
All the voters kept Cedar Grove No. 1 on their ballot, despite the out-of-state loss.
“The Saints remained No. 1 on my 3A ballot despite a 50-42 loss at Monarch (Fla,) High School,” Stewart said “Cedar Grove once again more than held their own against a program with twice the enrollment, playing in Florida's largest classification and a 1,200-mile road trip. Westlake moved up a spot on my 7A ballot to No. 6. The Lions have outscored their first two opponents, North Cobb and Crisp County, by a combined 102-40.
While all the No. 1 teams stayed in place, there was movement throughout the rankings. Nine teams entered or re-entered the top-10 this week: Grayson, Class 7A No. 10; Baldwin, 4A No. 10; Monroe Area, 3A No. 7; Hebron Christian, 3A No. 10; Cook, 2A No. 9; Columbia 2A No. 10; Bryan County, Class A Division I No. 10; Macon County, Class A Division II No. 7; Clinch County, Class A Division II No. 10.
