A proposed new law would generate more solar power from Georgia rooftops

Representative Mike Dudgeon has introduced legislation, which if enacted, would allow Georgia property owners to lease their rooftops for the purpose of generating solar energy.

Twenty-two states allow such private arrangements; Georgia is not one of them.

According to a report from Morris News Service, some energy experts say such a change in Georgia law would create more jobs.

“Enabling free-market financing will spur growth in our state’s solar industry, attract investment from local, national and international companies, and create high-quality new jobs for Georgians,” said Jason Rooks of the Energy Industries group.

A spokesman for Georgia Power said while they have not reviewed the legislation he believes it is unnecessary and that the current law which prohibits arrangements between private property owners and private energy companies has served Georgia well.
